Extreme environments contain microbial communities that have adapted to conditions such as high temperatures, elevated salinity, acidity, and limited nutrient availability. This study examines the use of metagenomic sequencing to characterize microbial diversity and identify genes associated with environmental adaptation. It considers the application of bioinformatics, comparative genomics, and functional annotation to investigate microbial community composition and metabolic potential. Particular attention is given to enzymes that may have applications in industrial biotechnology, environmental remediation, and bioprocess development. Challenges involving sample collection, sequencing bias, incomplete genome reconstruction, and functional validation are also discussed. Metagenomic research can improve understanding of microbial ecology and reveal biological resources with potential scientific and industrial value.
